Dive boat Trojan, Haslar Marina Gosport
U90 was lost under tow after the end of the First World War and is not a war grave.
When we dived the U90 the shot was placed just to the port of the wreck and
slightly towards the bow. The wreck is leaning about 45 degrees to starboard
and it is important to get over to the starboard side.
We swam over the top and most of the deck planking is there to see. As we were
nearly at the bow we headed towards the stern of the sub. There are quite a
few holes in the outer pressure hull of the sub and a lot of the internal pipe
work can be seen. There are a hell of a lot of big conger eels on the wreck
so watch where you’re putting your hands and your head. There are also
some big crabs.
The first main feature we came across was one of the deck guns, this was a
lot bigger than I expected. The early subs of this class had 2 guns on board
and this was one of the early ones. The first gun is completely intact with
the barrel pointing skywards. From this you’ll come to the conning tower,
with the lean of the sub it appears that this is going to fall on top of you.
The periscope is there and the upper hatch is open. Don’t be tempted to
try and get inside as it is a tiny opening and judging by the amount of congers
on the wreck probably not a nice place to get stuck.
After the conning tower you’ll come across the second deck gun. Again
this is completely intact and pointing skywards.
At the stern of the sub the propeller is clear of the sea bed and plain to see. The rudder and planes are all there to see. Coming around the stern and heading back to the bow again there are plenty of holes on the hull to have a look through and again there are conger eels everywhere. As you near the bow you’ll see the hydroplane above you and then at the bow there is some damage. This may have been caused when the sub hit the bottom. In this area you can see the forward torpedo tubes.
All in all this is an excellent dive. We were lucky in having about 10m viz. I think even if you only had a few metres viz it would still be a cracking dive as all of the features of the sub are easy to find.
